"This aircraft was acquired in Great Britain by Aerotécnica, as G-AIKO and registered in Spain as EC-AJV. On October 5, 1959, Rodolfo Bay Wright acquired what he founded Aero-Taxis of Spain later Spantax (Spanish-Taxi). With this airplane, he begins to fly throughout the Spanish Sahara, for the French and American companies engaged in the exploration of oil in that territory. It flew to Tindouf in Algeria. This airplane got into difficulties when suffering an engine failure while returning to Gando from El Aaiún, 40 nautical miles of the coast of Gran Canaria, this happened on the 25th of May of 1960.
Two of the four people on board, the Pilot, Tino Rubio, and an American passenger, Mr. Brennan, head of a prospecting camp, were rescued by a SAR helicopter, a Sikorsky S-55. With certain difficulties when the hoisting crane fails. The injured passengers were brought ashore from the hoisting cable, fortunately unharmed.
