Narrative:
DH.60G [Gipsy I] registered G-AAKF [C of R 2094] 25.7.29 to Malcolm Campbell (London) 1927 Ltd, Stag Lane. C of A 2128 issued 25.7.29. Sold in August 1929 (but not registered) to Hamish F. Armstrong, and shipped out to New Zealand in August 1929, arriving in November 1929. UK Registration G-AAKF cancelled as "sold abroad" in November 1929.

New Zealand Registration ZK-ABJ reserved but not taken up. Instead Registered as ZK-ABM 31.1.30 to Hamish F Armstrong, Akitio, east of Dannevirke.

On 21.7.35, Hamish Armstrong was on a flight from his farm at Akitio to Hastings when he crashed, in bad weather and off-course, in snow at about 1200 metres AMSL in the Ruahine Ranges only 30 metres below the top of a saddle (later renamed Armstrong Saddle).

An air search of the Ruahine and Kaweka Ranges failed to find the missing aircraft. Two weeks after its disappearance ZK-ABM was located, lying on its side and severely damaged. The crash was survivable but there was no sign of Mr Armstrong at the crash site and it is believed that he attempted to walk to safety with less than adequate clothing and footwear for the winter conditions, possibly injured, and probably without his glasses. His body has never been found.
R.I.P.

Aircraft salvaged by Wairarapa & Ruahine Aero Club, Masterton 2.10.35 and given to club by Armstrong's parents. Rebuild abandoned and engine used in DH.60 Moth ZK-ABE.
