A Robinson R22 helicopter clipped some high voltage cables and crashed near a highway at San Liberato locality, near Narni (Terni) Umbria (at approximate coordinates: 42°28'48"N, 12°26'17"E). Both occupants were killed. According to a rough translation from Italian into English of contemporary press reports:
"Narni, January 15, 2012 - A HELICOPTER and 'crashed shortly after 15:30 today afternoon in a rural area between Narni and Orte, on the border between Umbria and Lazio, near the motorway junction: as you and' learned from firefighters fire and police in Terni, in the airplane, a private vehicle, there would stated two men, originating in Narni respectively and Vitorchiano (Viterbo). On the site where the helicopter and 'fell went firefighters of Terni and Orte police.
DYNAMICS. According to a first reconstruction of the same brigade the aircraft - for reasons yet to be verified - with one of the blades would hit a guide wire electricity (current free) and the impact it would have destabilized the flight, so as to cause, a distance of about 300 meters, the fall in the field below. The police are on the premises of Narni, Amelia and Civita Castellana (Viterbo).
The victims are Philip Simi, 39, of Narni, and Giogrio Mestichelli, 57, of Vitorchiano (Viterbo on). Simi, a few hours after the tragedy cruise ship Costa Concordia, was the Isola del Giglio had posted some photos of the sunken ship on Facebook and wrote: "shudder to see these photos."
