Exploded midair, hydrogen leaked from the envelope and came into contact with sparks from the engine, causing the gas to explode. Killing the captain Oskar Erbslöh, Max von Toelle, Rudolf Kranz, Hans Leo Höpp, and mechanic Joseph Spicks.
