The aircraft took off from an airstrip at Fazenda Kaiser, Balsas, MA, at 15:30 (UTC), in order to carry out a local flight of agricultural pesticide application, with a pilot on board. During the flight, the aircraft lost power and made a forced landing in a field.

It was found that the engine's #3, #4 and #5 cylinders were externally coloured, typical of operation at high temperatures, and internally showed detonation marks. Both of the aircraft's magnets functioned abnormally during post-accident tests. During these tests, the magneto cabling showed problems with cable continuity.
The manufacturer's publications containing instructions for reinstalling and calibrating the magnets were not available at the maintenance organisation that carried out the magnet installation.
