F-16C 88-0449 (call sign SPIDER 2) of the 421st FS, 388th FW, USAF was written off on 7 January 1998 when involved in a mid-air collision with another F-16C of the 421st FS, 388th FW (88-0537, call sign NAIL 3) at about 13:21 hours local over Utah Test and Training Range, 105 miles from base, at co-ordinates at 40'01.46" N and 11'34.10" W.
They were in six ship tactical intercept training sortie from Hill AFB. The lead aircraft collided with the wingman of the aggressor formation. The trailing wingman’s aircraft lost 40% of its right wing resulting in an uncontrollable spin. The aircraft crashed within the boundaries of the range. The pilot of this aircraft, Captain Paul Hertzberg, ejected with minor injuries.
The other aircraft, an F-16C 88-0537), suffered a gash in the wing and a lost missile and its rack. The pilot was Captain Scott Hufford, who was able to nurse the aircraft to Michael Army Air Field, Utah for an emergency landing.
