Narrative:This was the first "Red Arrows" Hawk crash where two of the Hawk T.1As (XX259 and XX241) had a wing tip collision which caused them to plunge to the ground in the village of Welton, near Lincoln, five miles east of Scampton, Lincs. during practice aerobatics.
Red 2 collided with Red 1 after the airbrake failed to operate during a display practice. Wreckage from XX259 fell onto houses at Monce Close in Welton, the other aircraft crashed into a field. Both pilots ejected and there were no casualties on the ground
Pilot of XX259 (RED 1) was later named as Flt. Lt. M. J. "Spike" Newbury, who ejected, but suffered a broken leg. He was taken to Lincoln County Hospital for treatment
